Here in my part of the world, 2014 was ushered in with the multiple “booms” of Osøyro‘s fireworks sounding over the mountain behind us, the small displays of color to our left visible across the fjord and sea out towards the islands of Lepsøy and the south end of Sotra, and the distant rumble and constant light reflecting off the clouds over Fanafjellet towards Bergen … and, for us living in Lysekloster, the neighbors’ very real and present displays feeling up close and personal.
Although photos of fireworks are usually inadequate or unsuccessful, I still enjoy chasing the streaks of color against a black background with a camera, and so I thought I’d share some of the flashes I captured last night. Imagine the sounds of crackling and zooming and booming … the feel of the occasional raindrops the clouds helpfully held off on dumping until *after* midnight had passed … the blinding brightness of the explosions against the black sky … the reflections of those explosions on the lowering clouds and black fjord waters … and the vivid streaks of color that emanated from the brightness against the overall darkness … and you’ll be joining me vicariously as I said hello to 2014.
I enjoyed watching the single red light that was shot into the air over Ole Bull’s Villa on Lysøen; it drifted slowly down, peeking through the tree and reflecting off the fjord:
To the right, towards the more populated area of Lysekloster – maybe about 400 people? – several families were celebrating:
Further towards Fanafjellet, across the fjord, I could see a few small bursts; the glowing clouds and reflection on the fjord were effective:
Neighbors below us, living close to the fjord, sent their joyful colors into the sky; I particularly liked when they combined with those across the fjord:
Our neighbors to the right shared their last celebratory explosion … except it was so close, my photos basically show the energy from the bursts of light, and a few interesting shapes:
I hope your celebrations were safe and fun, and full of your own preferred types of color! 😉
