the serenity of Kysthospitalet in Hagavik

January 23, 2015 by Cindi 30 Comments

Yesterday I was at Kysthospitalet Hagavik for medical appointments. This is a specialized hospital, one I’ve gotten to know fairly well in the last five years.

Yesterday’s fourth-day-in-a-row of sunshine (and, as it turns out, the last for now) was glorious. After my appointments were through I took a brief walk in the sun while waiting for Jan.

It was so peaceful to stand in the warming rays and experience the calmness of the area from the different perspective of being outside the hospital instead of in. The crisp air, sparkling ice-covered fjord, bright sunshine, and winter-bare surroundings were magic.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Minimalist

November 9, 2014 by Cindi 31 Comments

Jen’s Photo Challenge this week is Minimalist.

“Minimalist photography is characterized by a large portion of negative space, a fairly monochromatic color palette … and an interesting subject that is able to stand on its own to capture the interest of the viewer … A minimalist photo can also effectively tell a story, in spite of its relative simplicity, and it is anything but ‘plain’.”

I had fun looking through photos to find a few that fit this challenge, and decided to take the definition of “minimalist” apart and find images that fit specific qualities better, but still have the overall minimalist look. Does this one fit the description of “a large portion of negative space”?

I found two that I think are a good representation of “a fairly monochromatic color palette,” one with warm tones and the other with cool. Which do you prefer?

And then for the last one, “an interesting subject that is able to stand on its own to capture the interest of the viewer” … if you hadn’t already joined me vicariously on the journey, would this photo capture your curiosity as to what we were going to see?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Descent

November 3, 2014 by Cindi 48 Comments

Descent. Living in a mountaineous area, many images I’ve shared have shown aspects of this week’s photo challenge.

Norway is huge, and there are thousands — millions? — of steep descents to be found. But as I was out for a walk today, I came to the “old road” and realized that it captures the essence of descent for my tiny part of this big country.

The old road has three sharp twists and turns. It’s no longer in use as a road since the mountain was dynamited and the main road was put in (which is still not wide enough for two cars in some places), but it’s used as a wide walking path, and my husband remembers riding on a bus on this twisting old road when he was a teenager in the late 1960’s … sitting in the back, “hanging” off the edge of the road.

November 3, 2014 - Weekly Photo Challenge Descent

We’ve had a lot of rain, and the run off from the roads, rocks, and mountain of this area created a musical accompaniment as it meandered next to and under the old road, and descended down towards the fjord.

November 3, 2014 - Weekly Photo Challenge Descent

You know the worse thing about descent? The ascent that comes after it to get home.

November 3, 2014 - Weekly Photo Challenge Descent

Obviously, my camera was out often, much to my labrador’s frustration. She wasn’t happy having to stop and wait for me every time I saw a new angle to capture through the lens!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Cover Art

October 28, 2014 by Cindi 14 Comments

For this week’s photo challenge, guest host Pete asks us “… to stimulate your creative process and imagine which of your images you would like to see gracing the cover of a book, an album, or a magazine … The cover art can be a simple image, or, if you’re looking for a more technical challenge, you can add elements like (a) title … The main points here are to dig a new creative well and to have fun while doing it.”

I played around with a couple of my images with the idea of creating a specific Norwegian composer’s album cover — Ole Bull or Edvard Grieg, anyone?! — but decided to focus on this beautiful country instead, manipulating a favorite image from my oldest daughter’s visit in 2010 and adding an appropriate title with a font based on ancient runes.

Weekly Photo Challenge -- Cover Art

Book or music album, photograph or manipulated image, it really doesn’t matter. Norway shines any way you look at her!

(EDIT: I’ve added a version of this digital painting to the “free downloads” section of my nordic-pine designs website.)

Weekly Photo Challenge: Refraction

October 21, 2014 by Cindi 10 Comments

For this week’s photo challenge, Kevin asks us to show what refraction means to us.

One of the definitions of refraction in Merriam-Webster states that it could be a “deflection from a straight path …” Do the distorted shadows from these content ducks, taking an early-morning swim in the pool during our Wisconsin Dells vacation back in 2008, fit that description?

June 17, 2008 - refraction

Another Merriam-Webster definition is “… the action of distorting an image by viewing through a medium.” How about a window seen through a delicious liquid medium, pictured here on the enclosed porch of the Kafè Ole B during last year’s Julebord celebration?

November 9, 2013 - refraction

Or the distortion of the trees as seen through one of my glass window ornaments hanging in my home office window?

June 13, 2014 - refraction

Another of my glass ornaments seems to have an internal glow created by the sunlight passing through it, and the refracted combination of that light and the trees; it creates a warmth very appropriate for the heart shape!

June 13, 2014 - refraction

My last image is one I’ve shared before from a Viking and Medieval festival; it represents an example that Kevin gives in his challenge: “… an image taken in a reflective surface.”

June 2, 2012 - refraction

The physics of “refraction” fascinate me. It can change an ordinary, common object to something unique and artistic.

What refractions do you see in your environment right now?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Dreamy

October 14, 2014 by Cindi 37 Comments

When I think of the word dreamy I mentally picture a haze over a specific object. Since one of the definitions of dreamy is “pleasant, peaceful, and relaxing,” I thought I’d respond to this week’s photo challenge by sharing images with different aspects of that haze … and where I’ve also found peaceful relaxation.

In Modalen in 2007, watching the small clouds drift between the mountains and me as I was out throwing the ball for MacKenzie …

Weekly Photo Challenge: Dreamy

In the southern Bergen valley in 2009, when the low-lying clouds filled the valley and I watched the setting sun from my perspective above them …

Weekly Photo Challenge: Dreamy

Here in Lysekloster this past year, with the air and water temperatures creating interesting fog shapes that advanced and receded on the fjord …

Weekly Photo Challenge: Dreamy

… or the late spring or early fall temperatures and sun creating a haze in the sky.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Dreamy

And probably my favorite “dreamy” time, when the rising moon and setting sun mixed with the clouds and created something almost magical, captured both in Bergen and in Lysekloster …

Weekly Photo Challenge: Dreamy

Life is busy. It’s nice to stop and be dreamy for a while, isn’t it?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Signs

October 6, 2014 by Cindi 9 Comments

Signs. As Cheri says, they “… can direct us where to go, but they … also … reveal much about the time period and culture in which they were made. A sign can also be … something welcome.”

We’ve all encountered many signs in life, both in the local living environment and in travels. In looking through my photos, I found a few images of signs that speak to me as a reminder of my home country, as a traveler exploring a new country, contain information about something I’m looking at, and as a preserved part of history.

On an extended family trip during the summer of 2011 from Iowa to Tennessee in the U.S., I saw the familiar “Welcome” sign that is along the U.S. Interstates as we cross from one State into another …

July 2, 2011 - Weekly photo challenge "Signs"

… as well as a tall billboard along the Interstate, this one advertising an ironic combination of “Amish” and “Electric” …

July 3, 2011 - Weekly photo challenge "Signs"

To those in the U.S., these are normal and routine. But for me living out of the country, seeing them on my U.S. visits is a little bit of “home”!

When traveling you can find many historical signs to help visitors, tourists, and locals find their way. Here’s one from The Bergen School Museum/Holberg Museum.

October 9, 2010 - Weekly photo challenge "Signs"

… and a minimalistic sign for a candle boutique that helps accentuate a typical Bergen view: narrow and steep walkways and alleys.

Signs can help to identify statues and sculptures.

August 14, 2014 - Weekly photo challenge "Signs"

And, ancient signs can be part of a wall preserved in a modern-day building … like this, seen in a cozy wine bar located in a side street of Bergen.

May 26, 2012 - Weekly photo challenge "Signs"

How about you? When you look at the signs around you, are they familiar like a road sign, surprising when you catch a glimpse of history in a modern structure, or something else?

Contrasts: puppy and adult

July 1, 2014 by Cindi 12 Comments

Yesterday I posted a response to this week’s photo challenge of contrasts. I had two other contrasting photos that were more light-hearted in their approach (thank you, Tina, for giving me that phrase!) and I decided they should see the publish button too.

MacKenzie was snoring in the sunshine when I first read this challenge last Friday, and I immediately thought of the contrast between her as a four month old, energetic-but-slightly-unsure-of-herself puppy when she first joined our family in April of 2004, and a calmer, relaxed ten year old who loves to snooze the days away in the sun on our porch step or out in the yard. Such a contrast in her looks and personality!

2004 and 2014 - MacKenzie

Who can resist those eyes? I still can’t, ten years and another country later.
